ZynBit is Running Slowly. What Can I do to Improve Performance?

There are several configuration settings that can be changed to improve performance.  The first category, Administrator Options, applies to all Plugins (Gmail, OWA, and Outlook Desktop).  The second category, User Options, are related to Outlook Desktop Performance specifically.

Administrator Options

If your contacts load slowly or never load in the ZynBit sidebar, it is because ZynBit now checks all fields, including custom fields, with the data type of “Email”.  ZynBit does this to check for duplicate contacts and makes it simple for you to interact with the right contact.

For Salesforce customers who have 2 or more “Email” fields AND/OR a large number of contacts, the initial contact query can take 2-4 seconds or even time out altogether.  You can index each of your email fields in Salesforce to improve and speed up the performance.  A Salesforce admin should do the following:

Open the Setup Menu and choose Customize -> Contacts -> Fields

Edit each email field and set the field as an External ID and click Save (as shown in the last line of this screen shot).

User Options*

We have found that Outlook, and particularly Outlook 2010, will crash or hang for some users when ZynBit is loaded.  This is caused by resource constraints relating to the memory-intensive features.  These features can be disabled to improve performance on machines.  Other options are to upgrade Outlook if applicable, add memory to the machine if possible, and exercise maximum archiving of old emails to keep active inboxes small.


To disable the features on question, an option has been added beside the ZynBit icon above the configure button called email settings.

The settings perform the following functions:

The first box disables email tracking so that the customer insights on the email side panel.  Turning off this feature can improve performance in some cases.

Some users and companies also decide to turn off link tracking.  This improves performance slightly by eliminating the system’s task of rewriting links to insert tracking instructions.  This option is more useful in avoiding unwanted behaviors by spam filters than in enhancing performance.

The third box allows Zynbit to remain connected but to not display unless the “Show ZynBit” button is clicked on an email you wish to file.  Each time you move to a new email the default setting with this box checked is for the side panel not to display.  Upon clicking the show button, all the normal functionality is available.

The fourth item, conversation tracking and autofile email are two features that are extremely useful but can overwhelm resources for users with very large inboxes.  Disabling these features on older versions of email can be particularly helpful.
